Insomnium es una banda de death metal melódico nacida en Joensuu (Finlandia). Su música está influenciada por el doom metal, tratando temas como la depresión, pérdida o muerte en sus canciones. Incorporan algunos elementos folk y sinfónicos.
Su sonido ha ido evolucionando hacia un death metal progresivo más lento, con ocasionales influencias doom. Las huellas de su inicial death metal melódico escandinavo son cada vez más escasas, a medida que la banda va cambiando hacia un sonido más épico. Las melodías son muy melancólicas y el producto final es mucho más oscuro. Las letras de sus canciones suelen estar influenciadas, y en ocasiones, directamente tomadas, de poetas clásicos como Hölderlin, Edgar Allan Poe o el clásico finlandés Eino Leino.
